My path to the classroom is rather unique in comparison to educators. I was a terrible student and a teacher’s nightmare who stayed in trouble. During my time in school, I failed 4th, 7th, 8th and 9th grades before dropping out of high school at the age of 16. I received my G.E.D. and moved from job to job for nearly a decade. In 1998, I lost both of my parents six months apart. As a result, I spent time reflecting on my life and decided to make a change. A year later, I enrolled at Livingstone College and majored in music. During my first semester, I began visiting Isenberg Elementary in order to complete commuity service hours to fulfilled my college requirements.
I noticed not much had changed since my time in school. Students were given worksheets, the teacher sat her desk, and students with behavior issues were allow to sleep in class. I was disturbed by what I observed and took a role in the classroom as a volunteer and mentor. The next semester I changed my major to elementary education and sought other classrooms to volunteer my time. During my sophomore year I received a full academic scholarship and graduated in 2003 with a B.A. in Elementary Education.
My goal is to teach with enthusiasm and give my students different learning experiences from my own in grade school. Teaching is my passion and my desire to help young people succeed has afforded me the opportunity to travel the world as an educator. I have presented and given speeches all over the country. In 2011, after a rigorous process, Apple Inc. bestowed upon me a prestigious distinction, Apple Distinguished Educator. The achievement was a result of the integration of technology in my classroom, which has positively impacted students.
